5 Packing Tips for Moving Families

July 24, 2017

So – you’ve bought a Bradley Homes home, and you’re getting ready to make the move.

Congratulations! We’re so excited to have you!

However, we know that in addition to excitement, you’re also likely stressed out about packing, getting everything organized, and how your children will adjust.

We get it. Moving is disruptive and can be a pain.

That’s why we’re here to offer you the following five tips on how to make your move into a Bradley Homes community quick, easy, and a little more fun for your entire family.

PURGE BEFORE YOU PACK

Before you pack a single item, identify if you’ll want or need it in your new home. Too often moving families pack everything in sight, only to get to their new home and leave unwanted items unopened and untouched in their basements. Our advice? Get rid of it! Why pack, lug, carry, and store something that you’re never going to use? Moving is the perfect opportunity to purge clothing you don’t wear, toys your kids don’t play with, furniture you want to replace, and knick knacks you forgot you even had.

PACK SMART

Have you thought about what you’re going to pack-in and pack-with? Start asking your friends and peers if they have any boxes or bins they can lend or let you have for your move. Use small boxes for small items and large boxes for large items or clothing. However, always make sure your boxes are light enough to be carried and that the items inside are secured with tissue, paper, or towels if breakable.

PACK ESSENTIALS LAST

Don’t be the person who’s running late to work when they realize their hairdryer is packed in a box downstairs. Begin your packing process by selecting items that you won’t need for a while. Moving in the winter? Pack your summer clothes first. Won’t need your fine china for months? Pack that too! Slowly work your way to the things you use more frequently, but be sure to leave out the toiletries and food you may need access to during the move. Putting these items into a bag, instead of a box, will help you to transport and access them easily.

ORGANIZE & LABEL

Want to make things easier on yourself? Pack items from the same room in the same box and then label it. Labelling everything does not make you a control freak – it makes you organized and will reduce your stress during a chaotic time. By packing items from the same room in the same box, you’ll be able to transfer a box into its new home and not have to disperse its contents to different areas of your new house. This makes packing AND unpacking easy-peasy.

ASSEMBLE A MOVING SQUAD

Now’s the time to cash in those favours! Call up your friends and family to let them know which day you’re moving and to ask for their assistance either on the day of the move or to help pack for the move. To spark some interest and excitement to join in on the hard work, we suggest offering a pizza or BBQ dinner and some cold drinks in return. Having helpers will make packing and moving easier, quicker, and more fun for your entire family. What better way to move into a new home than surrounded by the ones you love!
